The Rise of Anti-Semitism on College Campuses

Hillel has shared on their website that since October 7, 2023 in the United States alone, 1,574 antisemitic incidents have been reported on college campuses, marking a 700% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. From October 7 to November 7, 2023, 129 unique campuses reported incidents of antisemitism. This is more than three times the highest number previously recorded, which was 40 campuses in the same timeframe.During the same period, 59 campuses experienced multiple antisemitic incidents, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue. 

New Statistics on Anti-Semitism

According to a report done by Tel Aviv University and the ADL, these are the following reportings on the increase in antisemitic incidents across various countries and key cities in 2023, compared to 2022:

Anti-Semitism in the United States

  • New York City: NYPD recorded 325 anti-Jewish hate crimes, up from 261.
  • Los Angeles: LAPD noted an increase from 86 to 165 incidents.
  • Chicago: CPD reported 50 incidents, up from 39.
  • Nationwide: The ADL logged 7,523 incidents, a significant rise from 3,697. The number of assaults increased from 111 to 161, and cases of vandalism soared from 1,288 to 2,106.

Anti-Semitism Worldwide 

  • France: Incidents rose from 436 to 1,676, with physical assaults increasing from 43 to 85.
  • United Kingdom: Incidents escalated from 1,662 to 4,103, with physical assaults up from 136 to 266.
  • Germany: Reports increased from 2,639 to 3,614.
  • Brazil: A sharp rise from 432 to 1,774 incidents.
  • South Africa: Incidents grew from 68 to 207.
  • Mexico: A rise from 21 to 78 incidents.
  • Netherlands: Incidents more than doubled from 69 to 154.
  • Italy: Increased from 241 to 454 incidents.
  • Austria: Incidents rose from 719 to 1,147.
  • Australia (October-November, 2023): A stark increase from 79 to 622 incidents.
  • Argentina: Incidents rose from 427 to 598.

These statistics highlight a significant increase in antisemitic incidents worldwide, underscoring growing concerns over the safety and security of Jewish communities. These finding are absolutely unacceptable.
