Beer Sheva is known as the capital of the Negev Desert. Located at the northern tip of the Negev Desert, Beer Sheva is also one of Israels fastest growing cities. ֲ  Home to Ben Gurion University, Beer Sheva has a large student population and a vibrant culture for young adults. The student community is very social and offers many opportunities for Masa Fellows to take part in student initiatives and activities. As a result, the area around the university has a college town feel, filled with entertaining nightlife. ֲ  Beer Sheva also has a large immigrant population and many Bedouin communities in the nearby areas. Fellows are encouraged to volunteer with these communities to better understand local issues of coexistence.

In the Classroom

After an initial period of pedagogical training, Fellows work alongside one or more of their peers 25 hours each week in a public school, leading small group tutoring sessions. On average, most Masa Israel Teaching Fellows in Be’er Sheva have a 30 to 40 minute commute to their schools. In addition to teaching English, Fellows also have the opportunity to create secondary community volunteer projects based on their own backgrounds and interests.

Where You’ll Live

The MITF apartments are located in the heart of Be’er Sheva’s Old City. The apartments are positioned within walking distance to the central train/bus station, markets, Ben Gurion University campus, music venues, bars, and dance clubs. The Old City thrives on music, art, and community, drawing comparisons to Tel Aviv’s hipster Florentine neighborhood. The historic architecture of the city has been revived through a youthful infusion of culture, with endless activities such as open mic nights, paint n’ wine, concerts, and more. In Be’er Sheva you’ll learn quickly that Israelis from the southern part of the country pride themselves on hospitality, providing a warm atmosphere into which participants can easily integrate themselves.
