Make sure the students have markers for this lesson.
Activities:
- Prepare an Environment ABC Booklet (the students will need markers for this). Using the original ABC list of vocabulary words you and/or your students created*, you will create a booklet where each page (or two) cover one of the letters.
*The list below can be used:
| A – air, atmosphere | J – jobs | S – sun, saving, smoke, smog, solar, soil, survive |
| B – breathe, building | K – kids | T – trees, toxic, temperature |
| C – composting, chemicals, CO2, carbon, climate, coal | L – lead, land, loss | U – UNESCO, underground |
| D – damage, dump | M – metals, marine | V – vehicle, vegetables |
| E – environment, energy, earth, ecology | N – noise, nature | W – wind, water, waste, wildlife |
| F – fuel, fossil fuels, fog, factories | O – ozone layer, oil, organic food, organism | X – x-ray |
| G – ground, global warming, gasses, government, green house, globe | P – protect, plastic, plants, pollute, pollution, population, policy | Y – your land, “You can make a difference!” |
| H – health, habitat, human | Q – quiet, quality | Z – zero emissions |
| I – information | R – recycle, release, recover |
Students should be able to choose a letter page to create (or they can work in small groups). Each page should include a large written or drawn letter of the alphabet, a clearly written or printed environmental word that starts with that letter (advanced grades can have more than one word for each letter), and an illustration of the word (drawn or copied and pasted from a clipart or magazine).
An example:
| E – environment |
Completed booklets can be shared with other classes by the students, displayed somewhere in the classroom or on a public school bulletin board, or even reproduced for each student to have his or her own copy.
- An alternative project (30-45 min) would be to create the large outline of an environmental object or scene. Students can then write vocabulary words on the image and decorate it as desired. The poster (or wall hanging) could then be displayed in the hallway.
