How Do We Find a Torah for a Jewish Democracy?

Video
Israel as Home
English
In this video (05:53), created in celebration of Israel’s 70th birthday, Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman argues that the model of total separation of religion and state is neither practical nor ideal in a democratic state that claims to be the nation-state of the Jewish people. Rather, he suggests that the state must recognize multiple Jewish sub-communities within Israeli society, each of which must have their own rabbinate representing their unique sensitivities and sensibilities. Created as part of the “Call & Responsa” series, this video is an invitation for dialogue and commentary on the issue. To see responses from leading rabbis from across the Jewish world, click here. Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman is President of the Shalom Hartman Institute, a leading center of Jewish thought and education that aims to strengthen Jewish peoplehood, identity and pluralism.
