An Explanation of the Tel Aviv+ Model

During your 10-month Israel experience, half your time will be spent living in Tel Aviv-Yafo. You’ll be working in the southern part of the city within a lower socioeconomic school with a large migrant population. Your other five months will be spent in one of Israel’s peripheral cities including Beit Shean, NazarethKiryat Gat, and Rahat. The order of placement between Tel Aviv and one of the four peripheral cities is subject to the organizer’s decision only. By this dual-city track, you’ll have the opportunity to experience unique and different Israeli lifestyles, while making a huge difference in the country’s society.

Tel Aviv: Israel’s City that Never Sleeps is a vibrant location with a fascinating culture, stunning beaches, beautiful sunsets, and lively nightlife.ֲ  Boasting hip eateries, a vibrant arts scene, and a booming nightlife, this laid-back beach town might make you feel like your interning in paradise but Tel Aviv’s appeal is more than just superficial. This sophisticated, global city offers an abundance of history and culture and is rapidly becoming a major player in the contemporary art scene. With world-class museums, theaters, galleries, and orchestras, Tel Aviv is a strong choice for culture lovers. Tel Aviv-Yafo is home to an ethnically diverse community, housing subgroups including secular and religious Jews, Arabs, foreign workers, and asylum seekers.ֲ  The city hosts many of the country’s most popular concerts, festivals, sports competitions, and holiday celebrations. You’ll have no trouble finding fun things to do in this city, making lifelong friends from Israel and abroad along the way!

Nazareth is located in the Jezreel Valley, in Israel’s Lower Galilee region. Today, the area is known for its mixed Arab-Jewish population and beautiful green vistas. As the largest Arab city in Israel, Nazareth has a deep history dating back thousands of years. Today, it is a vibrant center of Arab-Israeli life as well as a window into the authentic Middle Eastern spirit. As a Masa Israel Teaching Fellow in Nazareth, you’ll have the opportunity to explore this vibrant city and its rich history, while serving its population of Arab citizens of Israel.

In the classroom

Nazareth is home to a large Arab population, with a school system that traditionally lags behind those in better-off areas of Israel. Of 40 of the most impoverished towns and cities in Israel, 36 of them have a majority Arab population, in part due to lower educational attainment in general. You will spend 4 days each week assisting an English teacher in a local elementary or middle school. Your work is crucial in helping to provide equal educational opportunities, while providing underachieving students with important role models. In addition, Fellows will volunteer each week with an organization in the city in order to fully experience the cultural diversity of the region.

Where You’ll Live

You’ll live in an apartment in a community close to the school you will work in (walking distance or a short bus ride). Your apartment will be equipped with all of the basics (furniture, kitchen supplies, etc.), as well as wireless internet. You’ll get to experience day-to-day life in your community, alongside your Israeli neighbors, and will also be part of a community of young Israeli activists from other BINA projects in the area.

About the Provider

BINA: The Jewish Movement for Social Change operates a broad range of programming for Jewish young adults from around the world based on pluralistic Jewish study and community service, putting the Jewish values of “tikkun olam” (repairing the world) into action through projects focusing on coexistence, social activism and pluralistic Jewish learning. As a Masa Israel Teaching Fellow on a BINA program, you will have the opportunity to experience educational enrichment programming from one of Israel’s leading movements in Jewish social justice while connecting with Israeli peers working in the same communities through other BINA projects.
