{"id":767571,"date":"2024-09-20T14:15:52","date_gmt":"2024-09-20T11:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.masaisrael.org\/?post_type=in-media&#038;p=767571"},"modified":"2024-09-25T14:19:32","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T11:19:32","slug":"never-a-better-time-to-serve","status":"publish","type":"in-media","link":"https:\/\/www.masaisrael.org\/fr\/in-media\/never-a-better-time-to-serve\/","title":{"rendered":"Never a better time to serve"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"article-underline\">Since the war on multiple fronts began in October, American volunteers of all ages have traveled to Israel to offer a little elbow grease while soldiers and reservists are at the front.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes to worrying, hand-wringing doesn\u2019t do much good, and it\u2019s hard on the knuckles. Sometimes, you just have to take action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enter the \u201cSword of Iron\u201d Facebook page, which works to facilitate volunteer opportunities in Israel at a time when the beleaguered country needs all the help it can get. As both a full year of fighting Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon approaches, the High Holidays present an opportunity for resolutions of a different kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Yocheved Ruttenberg, lending a hand was \u201cthe easiest hard decision\u201d she\u2019s made in her 23 years. Waking up on Oct. 7 in her bed in Dallas, she recounted that \u201cas soon as I heard the news, I thought of my brother, the lone soldier, over there and knew I had to be in Israel, that I had to do\u00a0<em>something<\/em>\u00a0to help. And when my boss said, \u2018You can\u2019t go,\u2019 I told him, \u2018You don\u2019t understand\u2014 my people need me.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruttenberg went all-in, joining others who had reached the same conclusion. On Nov. 12, the Sword of Iron Facebook page made its debut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eleven months later, the page has more than 36,000 members who turn to it as a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities in Israel. Of the roughly 80,000 visitors to Israel this summer, thousands came through Sword of Iron, she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other accomplishments, volunteers are responsible for rescuing much of the $50 million of produce from Israeli fields since the war began, a figure reported by Leket Israel: The National Foodbank, which would otherwise have gone bad due to the loss of foreign workers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSword of Iron has inspired thousands of people to take action, leave their comfort zone, step up, and do good for the sake of\u00a0Israel and Jews around the world,\u201d says Ruttenberg. \u201cWe also reach out to those who can\u2019t leave home now but want to connect in whatever way they can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though donating to the cause is life-saving, \u201cthere comes a time when you just have to be here,\u201d insists Ruttenberg, who says that she was initially planning to go to Israel for two weeks, \u201cbut now I can\u2019t leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449885\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jns.org\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Volunteers-3-Yocheved-Ruttenberg-and-Hagit-Greenberg-Amar.jpg\" alt=\"Yocheved Ruttenberg and Hagit Greenberg-Amar\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yocheved Ruttenberg (left) and Hagit Greenberg-Amar. Credit: Courtesy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2018You\u2019re a hero\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Schnurman, a 56-year-old business consultant, recently arrived for his third volunteer trip in nine months. \u201cSword of Iron is more than a Facebook page; it\u2019s a community,\u201d he says. \u201cYou\u2019re in it with people who understand your love of Israel and also want to put it into action. Within five minutes of landing at Ben-Gurion [International Airport], I had 450 \u2018Likes\u2019\u2014that\u2019s an incredible affirmation and support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his visits, Schnurman, who lives near Scranton, Pa., has harvested produce, prepared and packed food for soldiers and displaced families, and repaired injured homes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One powerful moment he shared with other volunteers: Taking a shortcut from the Western Wall in Jerusalem via Ben-Yehuda Street last December, \u201cwe came upon a quiet, makeshift vigil for the hostages. When it hit us that the young people lighting\u00a0<em>yahrzeit<\/em>\u00a0candles and singing \u2018Am Yisroel Chai\u2019 were the same age as those killed just two months earlier at the Nova music festival, we all started to cry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The yearning to help also tends to be contagious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Sharon Benmaman, a program and project manager in St. Paul, it came in the form of a chance meeting last January with an acquaintance who had just come back from Israel. \u201cHe told me it was life-changing, that Israelis need to see that we care. And he said, \u2018If you can go,<em>\u00a0go<\/em>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A week later, Benmaman\u2014just three months after donating a kidney\u2014was scanning Sword of Iron for needs she could meet in Israel. \u201cI said to myself, \u2018How can I\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0go?\u2019\u201d The next month found her on a three-week volunteer trip preparing food and\u00a0<em>tzitzit\u00a0<\/em>for soldiers, picking clementines and avocados, and bringing five duffel bags of knitting yarn and needles to help occupy evacuees living in hotels far from home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the 59-year-old Benmaman\u2019s \u201cmost rewarding\u201d experience, she said, was visiting with injured soldiers and survivors of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449888\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jns.org\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Volunteers-6-Stuart-Lewis.jpeg\" alt=\"Stuart Lewis\" width=\"738\" height=\"1136\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Stuart Lewis. Credit: Courtesy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stuart Lewis also has a friend to thank for the inspiration. \u201cHis experience lit a spark in me, and within the week, I\u2019d booked a flight to Israel and scoured Sword of Iron looking for volunteer opportunities,\u201d he said. \u201cWhich gave me the confidence I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By March, the 65-year-old Toronto businessman was in Israel, where a Tel Aviv vegan restaurant at which soldiers eat for free became his home base. \u201cFlipping vegan burgers didn\u2019t seem like much, but one soldier said, \u2018You\u2019re a hero, that you came to a war zone to help.\u2019 In fact, everywhere we went, we got so many thanks,\u201d he recounted, including from a survivor of Kibbutz Be\u2019eri, one of the hardest-hit communities on Oct. 7, and a hostage\u2019s relatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had no idea what kind of community Sword of Iron has become,\u201d said Lewis, extending to administrators inviting volunteers over for Shabbat dinners. \u201cThey\u2019re strengthening the love between Israel and the rest of the Jewish people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2018It\u2019s a small thing we can do\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By day, Lisa Akrish is a fourth-grade teacher in New York City. But most evenings, she donates her time to updating the Sword of Iron spreadsheet to make volunteer gig-searching easier. \u201cIt\u2019s a way I can put my tech-savvy skills and my teaching experience to work for Israel,\u201d said the 33-year-old. All of which followed on the heels of her own volunteer stint this summer, including farm work, providing support to soldiers coming out of Gaza and barbecues on military bases.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449886\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jns.org\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Volunteers-4-Lisa-Akrish.jpg\" alt=\"Lisa Akrish\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lisa Akrish. Credit: Courtesy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-founder Greenberg-Amar was already active in raising money to import defensive and medical equipment for the soldiers before meeting Ruttenberg. Sword of Iron, \u201cinviting people to tailor a volunteer trip to their own needs and interests,\u201d was a natural next step for the mother of three, whose Ramat Gan home has become an equipment warehouse and distribution center. The page is kept fresh by the two founders and what they call their \u201cheavy-lifting\u201d team: Yael Yomtov-Emmanuel, Sarah Emerson Helfand and Ariel Boverman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An extra effort is being made to bring young Jews to Israel to volunteer, many of them fresh from college campuses where they\u2019ve been pummeled by anti-Isreal propaganda from friends and professors alike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey often arrive in Israel feeling lost in their own country, not accepted at their schools if they dare to stand up as a proud Jew,\u201d said Alon Bar David, program director for Destination Israel, which facilitates trips to Israel for young Jewish adults. \u201cThey tell us most of their friends have no idea how they feel. As one girl said, \u2018As a Jew, I needed to come to Israel where I can breathe and where I can do something to help my family.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-449887\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.jns.org\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Volunteers-5-Mark-Schnurman.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Schnurman\" width=\"1599\" height=\"1202\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Mark Schnurman. Credit: Courtesy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing in Israel and helping out there takes the fear away that is instilled in you by watching the news at home,\u201d said Schnurman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a small thing we can do to help make a difference, and there\u2019s also the instant special bond with other volunteers,\u201d said Benmaman.<strong>\u00a0\u201c<\/strong>You know you\u2019re all\u00a0<em>mishpacha<\/em>,\u201d family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewis adds that \u201cthe comfort of being among my people, and doing new kinds of work and meeting others, has strengthened my bond with Israel and the Jewish people. I have a greater sense now that this is who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>RESOURCES:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chabad\u2019s Jewish Learning Institute (JLI)\u00a0<\/strong>Annual Israel Solidarity Trip, March 17-24, will focus on volunteering including helping displaced families and supplying soldiers with essential gear, preparing\u00a0<em>tzitzit<\/em>, helping repair homes and harvest crops, supporting lone soldiers, comforting bereaved families, and offering briefings by leaders and activists.\u00a0<em>For information, email: info@landandspirit.org.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Destination Israel<\/strong>, which facilitates volunteer trips for MASA and Onward, has brought more than 6,000 young adults to Israel to volunteer. JFNA\u2019s partners include the Israel Educational Travel Alliance with help from Mosaic United; the Jewish Agency for Israel; the Israeli Ministry of Diaspora Affairs; and Combating Antisemitism. The initiative also partners with Birthright Israel, Masa Israel Journey and others. The four-day program features agricultural assistance, supporting soldiers\u2019 needs and repairing destroyed communities in the south.\u00a0<em>For more information, visit:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jnf.org\/volunteeril\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>www.jnf.org\/volunteeril<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Livnot<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>U\u2019Lehibanot\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cHelp Rebuild the South\u201d program has 160 projects on the ground repairing and rebuilding destroyed nursery schools, senior and community centers, and private homes. The five-day program features projects to restore these devastated communities, in addition to events with soldiers and inspirational speakers. It\u2019s open to people 21 to 120 with those 21 to 40 receiving an extra subsidy.\u00a0<em>For more information, visit:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/livnot.org\/israel-programs\/volunteer-in-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>livnot.org\/israel-programs\/volunteer-in-israel<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sar-El<\/strong>\u00a0is the granddaddy of Israel volunteer programs. For 42 years, Sar-El has been placing volunteers on army bases to assist in such logistical supportive roles as packing medical supplies, helping with food service and maintaining the bases. Sar-El programs typically run for one to three weeks.\u00a0<em>For more information, email: info@sar-el.org.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Taglit-Birthright Israel\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>Onward 14-day or 18-day volunteer program is geared for those ages 18-40.
