FZY Tochnit Shalem, which is FZY’s Torani track, is a dynamic programme in Israel that combines intensive Torah studies with substantial volunteering and experiential components. Shalem is the chance to study and experience an Orthodox programme and way of life, whilst interacting with Jews from diverse backgrounds from all over Britain and beyond. For three months, the participants will be based in our brand new purpose-built building. Whilst here, they will immerse themselves in intense study. The study programme consists of Torah studies (Gemara, Tanach, Halacha and Machshevet Yisrael) as well as advanced Judaic studies (Hebrew Ulpan, Jewish and Zionist history and Hadracha). The study section is an intense period, which allows the participant to grow spiritually, intellectually and religiously through inspiring teachers. A three-month section of the year is spent volunteering in a suburb of Tel Aviv. Participants could be teaching English in schools, volunteering in an old-age home or helping to prepare food in a soup kitchen. One day a week during this period the participants’ teachers and rabbis will come to Tel Aviv for further learning. During this time, participants are independently living in apartments with friends. For a further three months, the participant will get to see an area of Israeli society. The participant will have to do an army placement, whether for 2½ weeks, or three months, or somewhere in-between. Participants will also get the opportunity to volunteer in another area of Israeli society, be this with Magen David Adom (paramedic service), the fire brigade, on a kibbutz or on Masada.
