Carmel is the Reform Movement’s one-year accredited college program combining Jewish learning and living in Israel. Students complete coursework and receive academic credit at the University of Haifa, and study at the Reform Movement’s Lokey International Academy of Jewish Studies at the Leo Baeck Education Center in a Progressive Beit Midrash. Students learn the Hebrew language, take part in hands-on tikkun olam volunteer projects, develop new relationships and experience the rich culture of Israel. Carmel is endorsed by: the Union for Reform Judaism (North America), Liberal Judaism (Great Britain), Movement for Reform Judaism (Great Britain), Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism, Union for Progressive Judaism (Australia, New Zealand, Asia), and the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
Core contents of the program:
Academic coursework at the University of Haifa International School, Beit Midrash (traditional Jewish Study) at the Leo Baeck Education Center, community building, Shabbatonim, spirituality, tikkun olam volunteer projects, Progressive Zionist orientation.
What does it include?
University of Haifa tuition, Leo Baeck Beit Midrash tuition, dormitories, leadership seminars, tiyulim (day and weekend trips around Israel), one-month Kibbutz program. Extras: Jewish literacy, academic credit, integration into the Israeli Progressive community.
