“The Mechina for New Immigrants” is a preparatory program for new immigrants and tourists intending to embark on academic studies in Israel. The Mechina offers a year program, which aims at familiarizing the student with the teaching methods of the university and prepare him/her for continued study in institutions of higher learning in Israel. The program covers a broad spectrum of subjects and includes Judaic studies. Classes take place in a pleasant environment, that takes into consideration the special needs of the new immigrant or tourist who’s just arrived in the country.
• The Mechina administration, teachers and instructors try to help the new student adjust successfully to studies in the Mechina and become part of campus life. Emphasis is also put on getting to know the country, in order to ease integration and help the student become a citizen of Israel. Studies are complemented by social gatherings, tours and weekends around the country.
• The Mechina runs in two cycles. The first starts in August and ends in June, the second starts in January and ends by end-August. The Mechina program consists of compulsory courses and a number of varied courses which can be chosen by the student.
Core contents of the program:
Compulsory courses: Hebrew, English, Math, Government, and 2-3 Judaic courses. Optional courses: Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Land of Israel Studies, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Classes take place Sunday – Thursday; in total approx. 30-40 weekly hours. Within the Mechina framework, it is possible to participate in classes preparing the students for the psychometric exam (for an additional fee).
• In both cycles Hebrew Ulpan is included. Study level is “bet – vav” (2-6). The Ulpan runs for 6 weeks, and after a short break, the Mechina starts.
• Graduates of the Mechina receive a diploma specifying the study track, courses and grades, including the general average. Courses in English and Hebrew are acknowledged for continued study at all academic institutions in the country.
