Dear Friends,
Shana Tova!
Mercaz Shimshon - Beit Shmuel together with the Jerusalem English Speaking Theater (JEST) is pleased to invite you to "Korczak’s Children."
Mercaz Shimshon - Beit Shmuel, is one of the most dynamic cultural institutions located in Jerusalem today. Every day of the week Mercaz Shimshon - Beit Shmuel serves residents not only in Jerusalem but throughout the State of Israel. The center holds a broad range of entertainment and plays, courses and symposiums as well as guided tours in Jerusalem and around Israel. Last year the center expanded its constituency and began bringing in programs for English speakers, both for those who live in Jerusalem on a permanent basis, as well as for those who are visiting.
During Chol ha moed and Sukkot tickets will be available for the play "Korczak’s Children." This play is a joint effort between Mercaz Shimshon - Beit Shmuel and the Jerusalem English Speaking Theater (JEST). The play was especially chosen because it speaks to all religious communities in Israel (Jews, Muslims and Christians) while it tells the dramatic story of Korczak’s Children who defiantly worked under the inhumane conditions of the Warsaw Ghetto but managed to put on a play that was humane, filled with wit and even humor. This play is deeply touching, filled with life, irony and even comedy. "Korczak’s Children" is a must see for all visitors to Israel.

A Short History of the Production
Mercaz Shimshon – Beit Shmuel, and the Jerusalem English Speaking Theater (JEST), the capital’s pre-eminent English-language theater for more than two decades, present Korczak’s Children, the centerpiece in a series of top cultural events provided for tourists and Israelis.
After its world premier in Minneapolis in 2003, Korczak’s Children, by Jeffrey Hatcher, has performed to high acclaim across the United States. The Israeli premier in 2005 was a rampant success, earning passionate responses from audiences. The scheduled run, completely sold out, and had to be extended to accommodate overwhelming demand.
Based on real-life sources, the focus of the play is Januzs Korczak, an educator/doctor/author, one of the towering figures of the Holocaust era, like Anne Frank and Oscar Schindler. The story takes place during an intense two-day period in 1942 in Korczak’s ghetto orphanage, as the orphans demonstrate that they not only survive, but thrive, by preparing for and performing a play.
Despite the monstrous outside reality, the orphanage brims with joy, life, love, beauty, justice, and much humor — supported by the vision and devotion of a colossal figure who nurtures his “children” to maintain a society full of childhood energy, creativity, and dignity.
Brought to joyful life by extraordinary performances of some of the best and most experienced adult and children actors in the capital, Korczak’s Children is an exhilarating and compelling experience for adults and for children. Highly entertaining, uplifting, and almost spiritual, its successes with audiences have made it the longest-running English show in the capital’s history.
It is highly recommended that you make Korczak’s Children one of your most memorable Israeli experiences. Performances are currently scheduled for Monday October 1, Tuesday October 2, Wednesday December 26, Thursday December 27, Wednesday April 23, Thursday April 24, Wednesday April 30.
Seating is limited and shows usually sell out, so contact JEST or Beit Shmuel soon for more information and reservations.
