"I find myself thinking with respect about the dedication of a man who gave so selflessly of his time to meet with MASA students, encourage us in our adventures, and celebrate the Jewish holiday together."
The most striking part of the MASA group visit with the Prime Minister was the kindness and approachability that emanated from a man of nearly mythical proportions. His smile was warm and his tone intimate as he described his hope that our young group would continue to support Israel, repeatedly asserting that this is the only land to "truly live as a Jew".
I left the office stunned at the festive atmosphere he had created, and the fact that the Prime Minister had actually joined in to sing Chanukah songs with us.
This experience made the news of his declining health more shocking. It is hard to believe that this strong. jovial presence could have taken such a rapid turn for the worse. Yet I find myself thinking with respect about the dedication of a man who gave so selflessly of his time to meet with MASA students, encourage us in our adventures, and celebrate the Jewish holiday together.
I feel lucky to have been able to be with Ariel Sharon as he was that day and will take with me his passion about Jewish life in the Jewish state.
