Beaufort Film Screening

Focusing on a group of IDF soldiers stationed at the Beaufort Castle during the last days of the first Lebanese war, Beaufort functions as a personal diary portraying the fear, isolation, camaraderie, tension, love and commitment engulfing the soldiers that guarded the isolated outpost.  The film will be screened in Hebrew with English subtitles and followed by a meeting with the director, Joseph Cedar and/or novelist Ron Leshem, who wrote the book on which the movie was based.

Encounters with Israeli Writers - Etgar Keret and Shahara Blau

 

An evening devoted to the art of writing with with Etgar Keret and Shahara Blau, two of Israel's top contemporary literary figures.

Etgar Keret's (1967) work, which is mainly a compilation of short stories, screenplays, and comic books, has been extremely well received within Israeli society and many regard his writing as idiosyncratic of a whole generation of young Israeli writers, particularly the body of literature published in Israel during the second half of the 1990s. Born in Ramat Gan, Keret currently lives in Tel Aviv.

 

Shahara Blau (1973) is a writer and journalist who often appears on Israeli radio and television to discuss issues concerning the Holocaust and the religious-secular divide within Israeli society.  Blau was born in the religious neighborhood of Bnei Brak where she continues to live today.

The film tells the story of a newly observant couple who struggle to host two manipulative guests who come from the dangerous world the couple had left behind.  The film screening will be followed by a discussion with screenwriter, director, and staring actor Shuli Rand.

Observe Holocaust Memorial day with Israel's Psik Theater's original rendition of The Court Jesters, a play that tells the story of four Jewish inmates of Auschwitz who are chosen to serve as court jesters for the camp commandant.  The strong desire to live and make some sense of life connects the world of the concentration camp to contemporary  reality and brings the court jesters close to those who are willing to listen and remember.
